Tourism is a major contributor to the climate crisis. Air travel is responsible for 3.5% of global CO2 emissions. If all transportation and distribution chains associated with the tourism sector are included in the calculations, it is even assumed to account for 8% of global CO2 emissions. While in times of the pandemic, the focus suddenly shifted to closer and more accessible places of recovery, the opposite travel behavior was expected in the post-pandemic situation. The general mobility sector is facing various technological, ecological and social changes. In this "leav" project, we investigated the question of what design potential results from these framework conditions and how sustainable travel decisions can be promoted.
According to a survey of the "Greentravel aliance" the mayority of (german) travelers stated that they would like to make their vacation trip sustainable, but only less than 7% really paid attention to sustainability on their last trip.
Although sustainable booking platforms exist, they are only used by a small percentage of travelers. Making a sustainable travel decision is associated with extra effort and sacrifice. The complexity of tourist activities (type of journey, choice of accommodation, activities and local transportation) also makes it difficult for travellers to plan a holistic environmentally friendly vacation. Established travel providers do not (yet) place sustainability aspects at the heart of their offers, which means there is a lack of transparency. At the same time, only a combination of ecological motivation on the part of travelers and corresponding offers on the part of companies can lead to a climate-friendly result.
During the project it was not easy how to aproach the problem due to the difficult combination of sustainability and the travelers expectation. What I really enjoyed was the ideation on how to aproach the problem and how to build up an evolving business behind the service.
